The Election of 1992
During the election of 1992,the Republican party candidate was George H.W Bush and Dan Quayle. George H.W Bush was running for reelection this year against, the Democratic party candidate Bill Clinton and his running mate Al Gore. Bill Clinton was Governor of Arkansas and was called Boy Governor do to his charming smile. There was also a third party candidate names Ross Perot. He was a self-made billionaire and businessman, he became the most successful third-party candidate since Teddy Roosevelt in 1912. Ross Perot was apart of the Independent party and his running mate was James Stockdale.
While having a third party candidate in the election things got interesting for all parties involved, they would have to work harder to receive votes. To gain these votes Perot aired infomercials dealing with his economic ideas, these commercials would contain charts and graphs to illustrate his plan. The main issues during the election was education, health care and economic growth. The campaigns of all the candidates touched on this issues and what they were going to do to fix them.
Television became a huge role in the election, they were used to broadcast debates between the candidates. They were also used to broadcast commercials that were created by the campaigns. Debates were primarily held on T.V and they addressed controversial topics such as health care, education and the economy. People would watch the debates to learn more about each candidate. When it came to Clinton's debates he seemed to be very comfortable and unintimidated with anything that was brought up. This charisma that he had made the nation confident in his leadership.
When all the votes were made the nation had voted Bill Clinton as the new President. He had won the election with 42.9 % of the popular vote, making him the first baby boomer president. His election ended 12 years of Republican control of the White House and marked the fourth time in the twentieth century that a sitting president wasn't re-elected. Clinton had beat Bush on the popular vote by 6% making the race very close do to the third party candidate. Ross Perot failed to win any electoral college votes but won 18.8% of the popular vote.
