WAR IN Kosovo
Kosovo is the disputed borderland between Serbia and Albania, about 90% of the people living there are Albanians. The conflict was between the Kosovo Liberation Army and Slobodan Milosevic's Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, there had been tension between these two groups for awhile and they finally reached there breaking point. The armed conflict in Kosovo broke out on February 28, 1998 and lasted until June 21,1999. This caused over 1,500 deaths and forced 400,000 Kosovars out of their homes. This became a concern because of how quickly it escalated, its humanitarian consequences and the risk of it being spread to other near by counties.(http://www.nato.int/kosovo/history.htm). NATO then had to decided whether or not they would get involved in the conflict taking place in Kosovo. While they were deciding over 2,000 people were killed do to the Serbian government's policies in Kosovo.
Finally NATO decided that they were going to get involved in what was going on, do to the genocidal acts on the part of the Serb-dominated Yugoslavian government against ethnic Albanians. They had decided to use an airstrike to make Milosevic's people who withdraw their forces out of Kosovo. There involvement in Kosovo became NATO's first military engagement. As the conflict continued 90% of the population in Kosovo was kicked out of their homes, 225,000 Kosovar men were missing and about 5,000 Kosovars had been executed.(http://www.nato.int/kosovo/history.htm). There was a lot of controversy over NATO being involved and the bombings that took place. The war in Kosovo lasted almost 14 months and ending with the signing of the Military Technical Agreement on June 9, 1999. This agreement agreed to withdraw all airstrikes from Yugoslavia, it was signed by Lt. Michael Jackson from NATO and Colonel Obrad Stevanovic from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Republic of Serbia.
Slobodan Milosevic was the president of Serbia from 1989 to 1997 and after his presidency he served at president of the Republic of Yugoslavia.

After the war ended was deemed responsible for any offenses against international law committed during the Kosovo conflict and was indicated in May of 1999. He was able to finish his term as President of the Republic of Yugoslavia but was arrested by Yugoslav government in 2001 with charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
